Art Of The Week: Liz Calvin’s Mosaics

As they did in 2005 to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association, Liz Calvin and Bruce Walther are spearheading the design of Cultural Olympiad 2008 mosaics.
I met Mosaic Artist Liz Calvin yesterday at Sinclair Centre who explained that the mosaic above depicts a cross section of a tree stump surrounded by water and a vista of downtown Vancouver with Stanley Park at the top of the circle and the sea walk depicted as a regular pattern of bricks. It also shows Vancouver harbour, as the 5 sails of the Vancouver Convention Centre. Inside the tree stump circle, there is a bird wing, a bear paw and a salmon which represent earth air and water elements.
Liz Calvin’s mosaic is a wonderful work of art that we can all be proud of and is a great contribution of artistic expression to the Cultural Olympics of Vancouver.
