Dealing With Your Bad Boss

There is good and bad bosses everywhere. And I am sure that most of you, readers, have heard at least once in your life time someone you know complaining about her or his boss. I know by experience that  ”managing a difficult boss” is a challenge but often feasible. First, you should try to understand the reasons for your boss’ difficult behavior. You have to put yourself in his or her shoes.  The Globe and Mail’s came up with something that might be the solution on how to deal with “bad bosses” .

Marjo Johne says, “Telling your boss to off -tactfully - may be the secret to a happier work life – according to a recent article.” The Report on Business in the Globe and Mail notes that not only are employees fed up with their bosses, but they’d rather quit than talk it out. “Communication skills” won’t be appearing on the job applications of these employees!”[The Globe And Mail]

  1. My old boss, who retired last year, had deep rooted mental problems. He would deprive the staff of needed supplies, and sneak around during the day and at night trying to catch workers goofing off. He never once stuck up for an employee during is reign of terror. He would make hard working employees redo work done by inept workers. We complained regularly to the superintendent but he preferred to put his head in the sand, like an ostrich.

I booked a trip to Thailand for 2 weeks. When I told my supervisor I needed the time off, she asked me, “where I was going”? When I told her, I could just tell something was wrong. She smiled and questioned me about my whole trip. One woman even put up a sign to wish me well. So, off I went. I had a great time and when I returned, the atmosphere was definitely not the same. The staff was a very distant and cold to me.??Five months later I got another opportunity to go to Asia again. It was such a great deal I could not pass it up. This trip was just with my girlfriends. We were not bringing our significant others. When I told the manager I wanted to take my second vacation week, again she asked, “and where are you going this time”? When she found out that it was just girls that were going, she then asked, “are the other women married” and “do they have any children?”. I said yes. The point she was trying to make was that because I’m single & my friends are married with children, they should not be able to go! So, off I went, had a great time and when I returned, I could sense that something was brewing. Not one staff member asked me about my trip. It was like I never left. At lunchtime, the manager had the nerve to ask me how much the trip cost? I was shocked. It was then that I realized that they were all jealous.??I was not prepared for the following day. When I came in the boss said he wanted to talk to me. This conversation did not take place behind closed doors. With a big smile on his face, he told me he was having financial problems and that he was going to have to “cut my hours”. He told me I was the last one hired (which I was not). He was going to talk with his accountant and get back to me. I was shocked. The following Wednesday when I received my paycheck it was considerably less. The next day I approached him in his office behind closed doors. I told him there was a mistake in my paycheck. He told me instead of cutting my hours he decreased my hourly rate per hour. ($6,200.00 per year). We then had a pretty heated discussion. He told me that the office manager, while supposedly looking for something in his desk, saw the payroll sheet and realized that I made more money per hour than she did. (that is not true). I asked him when his financial problem gets straightened out will I resume my salary? He gave me another big smile & replied, “I don’t think so”. The moral of my story is that JEALOUSY CAN BE VERY COSTLY. I’ve learned to keep to myself. When you work in a business atmosphere you should keep your personal life to yourself.
