Hi Kids, Mommy Has New Boobs!

You are getting breast implant surgery to enhance your image but don’t know how to explain it to your kids? No problemo… A new picture book about plastic surgery aims to explain why mom is getting a flatter tummy, a ‘prettier’ nose or bigger boobs.

“When she was pregnant with her son Junior, who turns nine this month, Gabriela Acosta ballooned from 115 pounds to 196. Acosta lost the weight but wound up with stretched, saggy skin. Even her son noticed it. He told her that her stomach looked “pruney,” the result, he thought, of staying in the shower too long. So the 29-year-old stay-at-home mom scheduled a consultation with Dr. Michael Salzhauer, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Bal Harbour, Fla.

Acosta told Salzhauer that she wasn’t sure how to talk to her son about the procedures she was considering. That’s when he showed her the manuscript for his children’s picture book, “My Beautiful Mommy” (Big Tent Books), out this Mother’s Day. It features a perky mother explaining to her child why she’s having cosmetic surgery (a nose job and tummy tuck). Naturally, it has a happy ending: mommy winds up “even more” beautiful than before, and her daughter is thrilled.” [Newsweek]

Antibiotic Alligator

Experts say that alligator blood can kill E. coli, herpes simplex, and the nasty methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. It appears that many animals from the reptilian and amphibians families have curative proteins flowing through their blood.

Computerised Toothbrush

NewScientist posted a video on youtube which talks bout about a new computer game that guides children as they brush their teeth.

You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video

Here’s a novel way to encourage young children to brush up on their oral hygiene – turn a toothbrush into a simple version of a Nintendo Wii remote and turn a chore into a fun computer game.Parents or professionals trying to teach young children to brush their teeth are faced with two problems. Many youngsters are unwilling to brush their teeth in the first place. Then, even if they can be persuaded, they often lack the skill to brush them effectively – for example, the average five-year old brushes only a quarter of their teeth.” [NewScientist]

Are You A SMS Addict?

Are you among those people who send large quantities of SMS messages?

If your answer is a BIG yes, than you could be suffering from a mental disorder similar to internet addiction - Doctor says.

“People who are denied access to the internet or mobile phones displayed feelings of anger, tension, and/or depression. Jerald Block said that “internet addiction” is a “common disorder” that deserved inclusion in a manual of mental disorders used by health professionals. He also argued that excessive - as he put it - sending of SMS’s or computer gaming should be put into the same category as an internet disorder.”[Cellular News] via [American Journal Of Psychiatry]

Star Trek Fictional VISOR Might Soon Become Reality

Star Trek fictional VISOR worn by Geordi LaForge might become reality soon, researchers say. The Star Trek Visor is a device used by the blind to artificially provide them with a sense of sight. The device scans the electromagnetic spectrum, creating visual input, and transmits it into the brain of the wearer via the optic nerves.

“Researchers have proposed a brain impant for the blind, whereby visual signals could be wirelessly beamed directly into the brain. The idea behind this is that a blind person would wear a special pair of glasses that could record video images using two digital video cameras. This video would then be wirelessly beamed into an implant that would translate that video into electrical signals to stimulate a specific area of the brain. This area of the brain is called the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) and is a part of the brain’s processing system for sight. By electrically stimulating this area of the brain, it can give a blind person the impression that they are actually seeing something visually. Scientists have already electrically stimulated this area of the brain in primates and found it had induced sight perception.” via [Brain Stimulant]
