Western Misconceptions About The Muslim World

We hear a lot about Muslims and Islam in the Vancouver and Canadian news in general. In this article, I will try to clear up many of the misconceptions that are prevalent in what Mark Steyn of Maclean’s Magazine, the Canadian media and the western media call the “arab world” or the “muslim world” as if all Muslims were Arabs or all Muslims have the same views . Before jumping into the core of this topic, I will start with a historical analogy from an Algerian perspective.

When the French invaded what they named Algeria in 1830, they assumed the country’s people were all Arabs. But they were not! Algeria is mostly Berber. And the Berbers were, as they are today, divided into several ethnic groups, Kabyle in the mountainous north-central area, Chaoui in the eastern Atlas Mountains, Mozabites in the M’zab valley, and Tuareg in the far south.

Later, in the 1960s when Algeria was at war to recover its independence, some forces were working in the shadows of foreign lands, somewhere in the Middle East. That’s because some Algerian elitists had thought that if they aligned themselves with the so-called Arab world, they would get help. What a mistake!

Those elitists discovered a world that did not correspond to what they had imagined. The average person in North America or Europe is unaware that a “united Muslim world” or even an “Arab world” exists only in the mind of someone with a hidden agenda. The hidden agenda, mind you, has a vested interest in keeping that myth alive.

There is oil out there and a docile group of diverse peoples. If we consider the Muslim world, western countries refer to them as the Arab world! Egypt has long been one that trumpeted its ideology in the name of “Arabs”. Needless to say that it took them more than 20 years to slide into a forgotten state. Iraq? Syria? Where did the Assyrians, the Kurds, the Druses, the Armenians and all those ancient races disappear? Did they just fade away with the time and transform into Arabs? No, they are still there. They just acquired the Arab language and culture. Their ancestors were also coercefully islamised. But does that make them Arabs? In case you answered yes, then you should also consider all the descendants of slaves in the United States as being white. Since black people acquired the white ways, language and culture (ie: Bill Cosby). Then we have the whole of the so-called “Muslim world”. True, some regions have developed a new language from Berber and Arabic and yet the common westerner does not know that the Tunisian peasant can’t understand an Egyptian or a Jordanian nor does he practice the same Islam.

Where is the Muslim world?

The Muslim World and the Arab world are a western myth.

When CNN talks about Arab unity, the Arab league or the Muslim world, we all think they all mean one thing, but they don’t. How can so many diverse concepts in such a diverse Arab world all mean one thing? I suggest that vague notions have been created in the minds of western journalists and are now becoming accepted reality in everyone’s mind.

Islam is probably the only common link between these people and yet, for a person who has gone through these countries, the Islam one practices in one region is totally different from one practiced in another. It amuses me to hear about students, here in Canada, complaining against Maclean’s Magazine filing human rights complaints because its content is offensive to Islam. It would be more appropriate to say that it is offensive to THEIR way of practicing Islam. They take advantage of the fact that they are in Canada to entertain the illusion of some Muslim world unity. What a conceit to imply to be the representative of the entire Islamic vision. Just imagine that Christians across the globe are in tune with the Vatican, what a joke!

However, there is one thing that Muslims all over the world have in common is that they don’t have a conception of separation of church and state, this is why there is conflicts wherever they go (including Canada) this is explained in the Islam Review blog.

“This is a major reason why conflict accompanies the islamists wherever they go. Islamists and their defenders want to portray POLITICAL differences and disagreements as RELIGIOUS PERSECUTION. Here are several references to illustrate this:

quran 9.29 - Fight those who do not believe in Allah, nor in the latter day, nor do they prohibit what Allah and His Messenger have prohibited, nor follow the religion of truth, out of those who have been given the Book, until they pay the tax in acknowledgment of superiority and they are in a state of subjection. […]

Albania. Chechnya. Sarajevo. Grozny. Kashmir. Paris. London. Sydney. Dharfur. Madrid.
Kosovo. Just to name a few. 1400 years of this. Verse 9.29 abrogates 123 verses of ‘tolerance’, and they pick and choose among those 123 verses to sell you on islam being peaceful, knowing full well that your more than likely unaware of verse 9.29, which cancels them all out. And it goes hand in hand with: ” [Islam Review]

The World today, and mainly the Western World, must awake: ideas such as a united Muslim world or vision, a greater middle east, a united Arab world are fanciful ideas in a diverse world and must be dropped for the good of all concerned.

The mainstream of peoples are anything… but Arab… in the very countries western journalists so wrongly call “Arab countries” . Moreover, Muslims do not practice the same Islam all over the “Muslim world” any more than Baptists practice the same Christianity as Catholics do.

Are There Limits To Freedom Of Expression On The Net?

Posted by: Frederic Desjardins

Whether it is through the residents of a town who disagree with city officials or a group of citizens who feel abandoned by the traditional media or even the initiative of a Dutch elected official who wants to share his views, freedom of expression is a topic that resurfaces regularly on the mainstream media and the internet.

This is a fascinating question and, overall, a very interesting one for those who are involved in Civil Liberties on the internet. Because on the internet, international laws, national laws, good taste and censorship seem to coexist in harmony. However this harmony can be hard to achieve for those who want to promote a message that is outside the themes usually heard on mainstream media.

A Controversial initiative
One of the best examples these days, is the attempt of a right wing Member of the Dutch Parliament Geert Wilders to broadcast a 15 minute video. Wilders is known for his numerous anti-islam theses. The Dutch Government immediately dissociated itself from the Wilders initiative attempting to broadcast the video criticizing Islam and its sacred book the Koran.

After the Dutch National TV’s refusal to broadcast the documentary, Wilders decided to publish it on the internet. The problem is, in Holland, people are tolerant and are used to these types of discussions, but by promising to broadcast on the internet, Wilders exposes himself to the laws of all the countries and all interest groups in the world.

Of course his film will not be the first of this type to be broadcast on the net. We can already see numerous videos expressing anti-islam views on video portals. One of them is the video of Theo Van Gogh titled “Submission”, which covers violence made against muslim women. The movie abetted a muslim fanatic to murder Theo Van Gogh.

Afraid of being the victims of some islamic fatwa. Web Hosting providers such as Network Solutions, who first accepted to host the official video site Fitnathemovie.com, changed their minds and refused to host the Wilders video.

To explain its decision Network Solutions said that its terms of usage forbids hate propaganda and defamation. They also stated that the Web Hosting Service is commited to respect international and local legislations.

So even if the Dutch are a tolerant people and accept all online documents that serve the purpose of discussion, when another country or government finds the same document offensive, Network Solutions has the right, according to its terms of use, to remove the document and transfer all the legal costs to the web site editor who might have contravened some foreign national laws.

Network Solutions would probably not host websites or blogs describing what is happening in Tibet because it might be against Chinese laws or those criticizing Birmany to avoid displeasing the local administration.

That situation could convince web site editors to choose a local web host instead of Network Solutions. But the local Web Host could also take into account foreign laws, because the web sites of its clients would be accessible in other countries as well, where other laws could be in effect. This situation could be remedied if the web host used a controversial filtering service to prevent the viewers residing in those countries to access specific sites that might be offensive, by fear of lawsuits, just as Google has done in China.

Now, let’s see if the Wilders’ Documentary will be on the web next Sunday or Tuesday.

About The Students Who Filed Rights Complaints Over Maclean’s Article 3 Months Ago

People who know me and my views keep asking me why I did not more upset about the Muslims students who filed rights complaints 3 months ago, over a Maclean’s article published on October last year. I have to keep reminding them: It’s just an article. Getting mad about people getting mad about a magazine article is just as asinine as getting mad in the first place. You don’t need a PHD in political science or to be a historian to know that things have been bad between the Muslim world and the Western world for a long time. This was just a symptom.

I did enjoy the tasteful way on how Rex Murphy depicted the story on January 3, 2008 - like the Human Rights Commission officials were out of their minds.

Here is a snippet:

What I do not associate with this deep and noble concept is getting ticked off by something you read in a magazine - or for that matter hear on television - and then scampering off to a handful - well, three - of Canada’s proliferate human rights commissions - seeking to score off the magazine: this is what four Osgoode Hall law students and graduates — a very definition of the ‘marginalized’ — under the banner of the Canadian Islamic Congress have done after reading an excerpt from Mark Steyn’s America Alone in Maclean’s. The complainants read the article as “flagrantly islamophobic”. [CBC]

I guess I feel bad for the complainants, just because after a while they are going to feel so stupid. “Yes, I was one those who filed a (silly) complaint against MacLean’s Magazine in 2007″

The Arab “street” is like that. They’re always damn mad about something. Maybe they don’t need democracy. Maybe they need their own 20 minutes editorial on Sex TV (prime time). That way they could still moan and bitch about crap that doesn’t matter, but at least it would be broken up by previews of interviews with strung out porn stars and ads for phone sex giving me at least one reason to look at it. It would also be an excellent way to save taxpayers money that is currently used to investigate, frivolous complaints.

B.C Sikhs File Rights Complaint

Last year it was revealed that in Quebec the fact that muslims women have to show their face to be allowed to vote is “non-negotiable”.

Earlier this month an Ontario Judge rules against Sikh motorcyclist who says Ontario helmet law is discriminatory.

Here in BC the Vancouver Sun reports, “Two turbaned Sikhs have filed a human rights complaint against International Forest Products, saying a new hard hat policy is preventing them from returning to their jobs at a Delta sawmill.”

I am anxious to see what the B.C Human Rights tribunal decision is going to be. Something tells me that the Ontario ruling will be used as a precedent.

The Afghan Version of American Idol

It appears that some bits of western culture is definitely reaching Afghanistan. On March 13 mainstream media reported that a woman from the conservative Pashtun belt, that’s the Afghan version of the U.S “bible belt”, is one of the top three contenders in the country’s version of “American Idol.” I wonder if members of the Canadian Army based in Afghanistan to protect big oil companies interests watched it.

Bridget Johnson says, “Isn’t the point that 11 million Afghans — a third of the country’s population and 90 percent of the TV-watching population — eagerly tune into Star each week, that 300,000 votes were text-messaged in for the recently aired finals, and that music is filling homes and hearts again despite clerical objections?

Being an American Idol junkie, I considered myself the perfect journalist to delve further into Afghan Star. So I watched all of the episodes put on YouTube by Tolo TV, the network that has raised so much of that clerical ire. The audition tapes were the best: As Idol begins each season by showing the good — and the very, very bad — performers from audition cities, Star also had audition shows from Kabul, Kandahar, Mazar-e-Sharif, and more; more than 2,000 hopefuls tried out for a chance to win $5,000 U.S. and a record deal. The audition shows opened with catchy music and fast-paced shots of the host city and its people — with production values equal to that of American TV, and some of the landscapes resembling Barstow.” [PAJAMA MEDIA]

Vancouver: City Official Caves To Bible Thumpers Demands

A few weeks ago, loonie evangelical, Charles McVety, successfuly pressured the federal cabinet ministers and PMO officials to deny tax credits to productions deemed too controversial or offensive now it’s The City of Vancouver’s turn to cave to bible thumpers’ demands.

A piece of public art that is judged controversial because it’s depicting an inverted church will soon be removed from Harbour Green Park in downtown Vancouver. Since centuries artists had to put up with religious censorship and they still do in countries such as Iran or Saudi Arabia.

Although an offer was made to donate the piece to the city on a long-term loan, Weaving said Wednesday: “We’re recommending it come out in part because of the mixed public responses.” In other words some Christians call it sacrilegious. Hey Ms. Weaving, what about the separation of church and government. When was it decided that municipal bodies are supposed to cave to religious demands. What about the artist rights? What about his rights to communicate whatever he feels? Freedom of expression and speech…wasn’t that what Canada was founded on?

What if a Muslim tells you that because you are woman you are unfit for the position you hold as the Vancouver park board arts coordinator, will you quit?

I’m extremely disappointed in the Vancouver art community for not standing up for artists rights. Since when public art is inclined to bend to the will of religious censorship? Is it since backward “idiots” are working for the park board?

Never mind, when provocative art comes around, there will always be some one to get their panties in a bunch and bitch to no end about how offensive it is to them.

Although an offer was made to donate the piece to the city on a long-term loan, Weaving said Wednesday: “We’re recommending it come out in part because of the mixed public responses.”
That includes, she said, concern from area residents that the seven-metre-high piece blocks view corridors and takes too much of a small patch of green space.
“Some people have also contacted us to say that they feel the subject matter isn’t appropriate,” said Weaving. [The Vancouver Sun]

Vancouver: Tibetans Protest To Reinstate Their Theocracy

I was at the Vancouver Tibet Rally this afternoon at 1 PM. Two weeks ago, On March 10 2008, Tibetans around the world celebrated the 47th anniversary of the Tibetan Uprising. The 1959 uprising received extensive assistance from the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), including military training, support camps in Nepal, and numerous airlifts. While Tibetans living in big cities such as Paris and New York are protesting, demonstrators in downtown Vancouver are currently staging renewed protests for the reinstatement of their Theocracy and also against the Chinese occupation and human rights violations in Tibet. Participants were mainly from the Tibetan community in Vancouver, gathered at the Art Gallery from where they marched in the direction of the Chinese Consulate in Shaughnessy.

The conflicting ideologies are, Chinese totalitarianism versus an archaic theocracy; You choose. The People’s Republic of China invaded the region in 1949 and then took full control in 1959. The 14th Dalai Lama fled to India with the help of the CIA. Nowadays, Tibetans live in a system that regulates nearly every aspect of public and private behavior. The Chinese Goverment maintains itself in political power by means of secret police, propaganda disseminated through the state-controlled mass media, regulation and restriction of free discussion and criticism, the use of mass surveillance, and widespread use of terror tactics.

For the Theocratic Dalai Lama, the rich lamas and other secular Tibetan lords, the Chinese Communist intervention was an unmitigated adversity and affliction. Most of them exiled , as did the Dalai Lama himself, who was assisted in his escape from Tibet by the CIA. Some discovered to their horror that they would have to work for a living. Many, however, escaped. During the 1960s, the Tibetan exile community was secretly pocketing $1.7 million a year from the CIA, according to documents released by the U.S tate Department in 1998.

AN EXPLOSIVE MIX: Loonie Evangelicals And Politics

It seems to be a great time to be an Evangelical, living in the U.S, with an active interest in politics. In the early part of the twentieth century Evangelicals were known to be withdrawn, and then, in the early 1990s we rushed headlong into a single partisan agenda. And Canada is not immune, just remember a few days ago when a loony Canadian evangelical said he pressured cabinet ministers and PMO officials to deny tax credits to productions deemed too controversial or offensive and it works.

Ronald J. Siders wrote a good book about evangelical involvement into politics.

Is Writer Brad Thor Risking Is Life With His New Book?

Brad Thor the author of The First Commandment has a new book that is likely to get him fatwa’d by some Islamic radical somewhere on the globe (or living just here in Vancouver). This book is the antithesis of CBC show “A little Mosque In The Prairie”. Fearmonger Glenn Beck has a copy of the book, and wasn’t three chapters in when he came to the conclusion that Thor is about to become the next Salmon Rushdie or Theo Van Gogh.

Here is a snippet of Beck’s interview with Brad Thor.

“GLENN: I just went on a book tour and I will not, nor can I, I’m not allowed to, tell you the precautions that I had to take to go onto a book tour. I tell you, Brad, right now that when I had that talk with you a year ago, I thought I knew I was prepared to die. It wasn’t until Christmas about three days before that I really, truly realized that I was prepared to die for what I believe in because of my book tour. There were so many death threats on me at that time and we had to take so many precautions that nobody knows about that I, in that month of December, had to come to grips with the fact that I may die and be shot and gunned down in the streets. It is not a pleasant — it’s easy for me to say a year ago to you, know what you’re prepared to die for.
THOR: True.

GLENN: It’s another when you are actually in that situation. Brad, I’ve only read three chapters. Last night I read the first three chapters with my mouth open and thought to myself, my friend Brad may lose his life for a fiction book. Have you and your wife had that talk?

THOR: We have. We have, and I’ve had the talk with, as you mentioned before I came on, some of my very well connected friends who are in law enforcement, who specialize in security for congress, the President, so on and so forth. Glenn, at the end of the day I think all that’s necessary, everything — we hear this phrase all the time but it’s true. All that’s necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.

GLENN: Wait a minute. Hang on just a second. Again I haven’t gotten to the end of the book. I haven’t even gotten to the meat of what I think is coming but I mean, do you at this point — because how far away is this book from being published?

THOR: It’s called The Last Patriot and it comes out July 1st. “[Glenn Beck]
